What are the symptoms of diabetes in a toddler?
Thank you
How do you distinguish from overly thirsty, and excessive amounts of urine?
Just call and get tested, I suppose, correct?
I can get them at CVS mozz?
Hes constantly thirsty, and I notice it more now, because when we have all 4 kids, hes constantly the one asking for a drink. Which then of course means he pees a whole lot more, some mornings he wakes up and the diaper is insanely full. And he isnt drinking throught the night..
He actually has a huge appetite, eats more than me sometimes.
But I mean I cant be sure, so i will be testing him.
Yeah thank you, Im going to grab the strips when I get out of work.
I hope it's all me just making something out of nothing.
It was so hard to catch onto the symptoms, because the symptoms of diabetes weren't terribly different than that of any other toddler. She had to pee all the time, she was crabby. Aren't they all?
She was unbelievably thirsty. Over the top. That's what eventually got my attention. And she wouldn't eat at all.
She was wetting the bed, but like any good mom, I attributed that to a growth spurt. Like I said, I justified the individual things until they were waving big flags at me. One night it was the middle of the night, she had wet the bed. She filled her little toddler pottie - she was half awake and half asleep and said Mommy I am so thirsty. And it hit me.
The whole hatful of symptoms also includes funky smelling breath and pores (she never had that, in fact she still never gets that one). Some people have an increased appetite, rather than a decreased one, so I never found that to be a particularly reliable symptom. And Kay, they just look sick. Ultimately, if an undiagnosed diabetic reaches ketoacidosis, in addition they'll have projectile vomiting, abdominal pains and labored breathing... the kind of breating you get with a high fever, only worse.
If you're on the fence about whether or not to call, you could check his ketones. They're urine test strips and they're non-prescription. They should be negative. If he's diabetic they'll be thru the roof. This will either ease your fears or put you on the path to your pedi. I don't know what they cost OTC (once you're dx you can get a script) but I'll tell you, ketone strips are not a terrible thing to keep in the cabinet. Anyone can make ketones.
The problem with doing a blood sugar test is that it isn't going to tell you a whole lot if you don't know anything about diabetes. There's too many variables to factor in and you don't know what they are. What time of day is it? When did he eat last? What did he eat? Is it humid out? Has he had a lot of exercise? Is he battling a cold? Dehydrated? (You get the idea)
Good luck and I hope he doesn't have it. We don't want any new members to the club!
