The ABC of Diabetes provides a complete overview of diabetes including the aetiology, diagnosis and management of Types 1 and 2 diabetes, detection and prevention, and the organization of care and support. With new chapters on psychological aspects, surveillance for complications, and support for people living with diabetes, this completely revised edition covers the many changes taking place in diabetes care, particularly in screening for Type 2 diabetes; in monitoring and insulin administration; in the organisation and delivery of care; and the increasing prevalence of diabetes in both developed and developing countries. This sixth edition covers the early recognition of diabetes and cardiovascular risk as well as preventing complications specific to diabetes. It also addresses the need to deliver diabetes care in a multidisciplinary setting, including the UK Quality and Outcomes Framework, and reflects the increasing emphasis on self-management and patient-centred care, particularly as it relates to lifestyle changes, glycaemic control and patient choice over treatment options. Drawing on the expertise of the University of Warwick as a centre of excellence for the teaching of diabetes care, the best selling ABC of Diabetes is ideal for GPs, primary care practitioners, practice nurses, diabetes specialist nurses, health visitors and junior doctors.
Hypertension and diabetes show a strong epidemiologic association. About 75% of adults with diabetes have blood pressure levels =130/80 mmHg or use antihypertensive medication and this percentage goes up to 90% if microalbuminuria is also present. On the other hand, individuals with hypertension are 2.5 times more likely to develop diabetes within 5 years of diagnosis. The presence of hypertension in patients with diabetes substantially increases the risk for both cardiovascular and renal diseases and is associated with a 7.2-fold increase in mortality, whereas in those with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, hypertension causes a 37-fold increase in mortality.Hypertension in type 1 diabetes generally results from the underlying nephropathy and in type 2 diabetes it usually occurs in the context of the cardio- metabolic syndrome. Understanding the pathophysiological context and the overall cardiovascular risk assessment together with the current therapeutic modalities for people with diabetes and hypertension is a sine qua non for effective management of this growing patient population. In this book we present to the primary care providers as well as to the sub-specialists an integrative approach to hypertension and diabetes including lifestyle and pharmacological approaches, focusing on overall cardiovascular risk reduction with special emphasis on high- risk population. We also provide an overview of the preventive measures for both hypertension and diabetes in the light of the most recent clinical trials. Finally, we discuss the future outlook for the epidemic and the ongoing clinical studies together with the various innovative diagnostic modalities.
In the United States, 20.8 million children and adults, 7% of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, 6.2 million have yet to be diagnosed. Worldwide diabetes afflicts 150 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2025 that figure will double. Diabetes is responsible for more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer, combined. It is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart complications and stroke.Treatment of Type 1 and Type diabetes has changed radically over the past few years. There are new opportunities for treating the key abnormality in diabetes, increased blood glucose, by effective agents such as new insulin preparations and oral agents.Increasing so-called non-glycemic intervention is of prime importance. Blood pressure lowering therapies, anti-cholesterol strategies, and specific treatment related to complications is becoming increasingly important.Pharmacotherapy of Diabetes is a unique, invaluable guide to all aspects of the pharmacological treatment of diabetes, covering basic concepts and an in-depth review of current and future therapies. This work provides an overview for the new changes in therapies that can be implemented in clinical practice and treatment of the diabetic patient.

Each simple guide offers a clear overview of all the information one needs to know about a particular topic, making learning something new easy, accessible, practical and affordable.
I bought a manual inflate arm cuff blood pressure monitor that gives out a digital reading. The pharmacist recommended it over the auto inflate b/c it was half the price and he said that would be the only difference. The reason i purchased one is b/c i'm pregnant and my BP has been in the 140's over 80's at my docs office lately. When i take my BP at home with this monitor, it's been in the 120's over 70's. It's made by HoMedics. Thanks!
The best way to be sure -- is to take your home meter with you on your next doctor visit and do a side-by-side comparison: his (or her) professional reading, and your home reading.
If the two readings are close to the same then your home meter is accurate; if they are not close, then your home meter is not accurate.

Drawing on the experiences of diabetologists, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists, orthotists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, the book clearly describes established techniques known to be effective. Also highlighted are the many emerging treatments that will affect diabetic foot care in the years ahead, including a new understanding of wound-healing pathophysiology and the recent introduction of growth factors and living skin equivalents.
Last night I dreamed that my husband was standing over top of me frantically asking me if I was okay but I couldn't answer him. I was trying to but I couldn't breathe. I was trying to tell him that I couldn't breathe but he couldn't hear me. My right arm was shaking violently but I couldn't move anything else on my body. I woke up feeling out of breath and my arm was numb and tingling (I guess it had fallen asleep). I've done this before, waking up feeling out of breath but I have no idea what this means. I'm wondering if I may be suffering from sleep apnea or is this just a silly dream?!
being paralyzed during sleeping hours is something common. but that may not be what's going on here. you being out of breath upon waking up does suggest anxiety and if dreams are "the cause" of it, you need to look further into your life to find out as to what's REALLY causing them.
Why Sleep Apnea Raises Risk of Stroke, Heart Attack
Pascualy (Sleep Medicine Associates, Northwest Hospital, Seattle) addresses snorers, their bed partners and other loved ones, and their medical providers in this reference explaining a major cause of snoring--sleep apnea. Text based in medicine but accessibly written advises readers how to determine if the cause of snoring is sleep apnea; where to find a sleep center; what the physical, pharmaceutical, and psychological causes of the disease are; and what the surgical and non-surgical (e.g. continuous positive airway pressure machines) treatment options may be. Chapters also address specific cases such as obese patients, women, and children. Annotation )2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
As technology advances, practicing or training otolaryngologists register in educational courses to refresh their surgical skills and stay abreast of these changes. While information is becoming available in several journals, there is a definite need for a single surgical atlas-like book that contains precise descriptions of the surgical techniques used in rhinology and sleep apnea surgery. Each chapter was written by surgeons with extensive experience in each topic who have already published on the specific procedure described. Each chapter contains diagrammatic or illustrative descriptions of surgical techniques and provides tips and pearls of wisdom to avoid complications when the procedures are performed. This comprehensive work of surgical information serves as a valuable resource for otolaryngologists in training to augment their surgical education and for practicing otolaryngologists as a review source to best approach the surgical pathologies they encounter in their practice of rhinology and treatment of sleep apnea.

How to get insurance for my diabetic supplies and doctor?
I'm a type one diabetic and I'm 17 now, but when I turn 18 I'm moving out on my own. Right now my mom has medicaide to pay for everything, but I don't know what I'm going to do when I move out. I would ask my mom for help, but it would just start an argument about me planning to move out. So can anyone help me with that. I have no clue about anything like this.
This depends largely on the state you live in and what your plans are after you leave. If you are going to work then often times your employer will offer health insurance. If you are going to school then you should still be covered by your mother's medicaid. If you are unemployed or your company doesn't offer health insurance then you may be eligible for your own medicaid or a plan like Healthy NY which is a state subsidized health insurance plan for people who make too much for medicaid and can not get a plan from there employer.

Is Apnea Risk Evaluation System (ARES) safe to use for sleep study?
The reason I ask is becate there are sensors and electrodes to attach to the head. Is this harmful to the brain in any form?
What about the Advanced Brain Monitoring Watermark ARES devoce for home sleep tests?
