How would I have my sister tested for type 2 diabetes?
She is 18 and she's obese (I calculated her BMI). Diabetes (type 1 & 2) runs in the family and I am worried about her, she refuses to eat right and exercise at all.
What should I do? Call the family doctor or just schedule a test? She would never ask the doctor for a test and I don't know if I should.
I don't usually go to doctor appointments with her. But our family doctor has never talked to her about the dangers of being obese.
It's good that you care about your sister, but you should know that obesity does not cause Type 2 diabetes. If that were the case, then all the obese people in the world would be diabetic. However, only a minority (about 1/3) of overweight people get Type 2 diabetes. The rest are just fat but would never get Type 2.
So why those 1/3? Not because they are fat but because they have diabetes genes.
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
