What is this digital thing they made me wear?

I went to the DR this morning for a physical. I had multiple tests done, blood flow, my heart checked, etc...but before I left, the nurse put electrodes on me and attached a machine that I have to wear until tomorrow morning. I thought nothing of it, just routine, but now I am not so sure. I looked at the lcd display and it only has the time on it.
Has anyone had anything like this before? And what is it for, exactly?

It is a heart monitor called a Holter Monitor and will record the activity of your heart for the next 24 hours. The Dr must have heard something when he listened to your heart that concerned him and he is just checking to see if it was a one time thing. I have worn them a couple of times. Just go about your every day routine like nothing is different, don't just sit around. When he gets it back tomorrow there will be an EKG paper inside the machine that he will look at and let you know if you have a problem. Mine always came back just fine. If something shows up he will schedule you for more tests. Just don't worry about it until the results are in. Stress will make your heart beat faster so relax, you have nothing to worry about yet and may not when the results are read. It is just precaution at this point.

Cozaar is Losartan, which is an Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ARB). This class of drugs works similarly to ACE Inhibitors, with the ultimate goal being to suppress the function of angiotensin 2. In treating hypertension, the ways this works is to (1) block the effects of angiotensin 2, which in turn increases salt and water excretion by inhibiting aldosterone and ADH secretion (the end result being a diuretic function). More importantly, (2) to block the vasoconstriction effects of angiotensin 2 directly on blood vessels. These two mechanisms keep blood pressure down (decreased circulating volume and decreased vasoconstriction)

But there is another important function, which is of great benefit in diabetics. A major complication of diabetes is diabetic nephropathy, which basically causes what we call Kimmelstiel-Wilson angiopathy, or disease of the small blood vessels in the kidney.

One way we measure the severity of diabetic nephropathy is by the amount of protein that is in a patient's urine (proteinuria). Normally, there is no protein in the urine at all. As the kidney gets damaged by diabetes, it allows proteins to get through, and out into the urine.

Studies have shown that ACE inhibitors, and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers decrease the progression of proteinuria. This means that these medications are slowing the progression of chronic kidney failure in people with diabetes. Note that about 35-40% of chronic kidney disease is caused by diabetes (another 35-40% is by hypertension!), so ACE inhibitors and ARBs are treating BOTH causes!

The problem with this is that the mechanism is complicated and not completely understood. However, the vicious cycle of renal failure causing proteinuria, which damages the kidneys even further is stopped. The simplest explanation for the mechanism of action is that if you slow the flow through the kidney (which is what ARBs do), then you are in turn slowing the amount of protein that passes through, and in turn, protecting the kidney from the damage that those leaking proteins may cause.

Is there a quick way to increase my blood pressure when it drops too low?

I am taking Lisinopril (40 mg) and Hydroclorothiazide, which is a diuretic. Sometimes in the evening, especially after having a vigorous workout during the day, my BP readings temporarily drop quite low...sometimes 95/65 or even lower. I can feel it happening...I don't actually get dizzy, but I feel as if I am about to, and I start getting a slight headache. My BP starts to rise soon after. Is there any thing one can do to "jump-start" their blood pressure at times like this? Perhaps walking quickly around my house? These low readings don't last very long, but I can feel it sometimes in the evening hours for a bit.
During the mornings and most of the day my readings are very normal....anywhere from 110/65 to 120/77.

Lie flat (no pillow under your head) and raise your legs as high as you can manage. Put cushions under them or raise them up against the wall. Your BP will soon go back up.
