Any other meds apart from Methyldopa for BP during pregnancy?

I'm not pregnant yet, but as we are trying for a baby and the GP has put me on Methyldopa for high BP as safe during pregnancy, I am also on Metformin for Diabetes and have good overall control of my Diabetes (Hb1Ac of 5.3) and I just needed some help with my high BP. I have been on the Methyldopa for nearly 3 months, 5x250mg daily and I'm absolutely shattered on it, was really hoping that the sedative effect would only be temporary but as time goes on .. I'm not so sure I will ever settle on it, any meds with possible sedative effect (ie. hayfever meds/travel sickness meds etc) have a really big effect on me to the point where I drop off to sleep in the middle of doing stuff so think this may be the reason as methyldopa can cause drowsiness, so totally confused what to do, is there anything else that others are taking during pregnancy thats considered safe? Also because of the constant tiredness ... the methyldopa is acting as a good contraceptive lol as I'm just too tired!!

Maybe hydralazine. Tell your GP about the sedation you're feeling with methyldopa - it's a common side effect so he'll understand. Pregnancy will make you fatigued anyway, so you really don't need your meds making you tired too!

I have no idea what's going on. Help?

Okay. I finally got insurance after being told by the health department that I'm diabetic. I've been paying for my strips out-of-pocket (which is NOT easy) To bypass the "pre-existing condition" problem and get my insurance to pay for my strips, I went to see my new doctor to get a full work-up and to test for diabetes. I passed the fasting with an 87, the GTT with 140 at one hour and 117 at 2 hours. I've also had an A1c done, I'm still waiting on those results, but my sugars have been well controlled for quite some time now. I'm very frustrated! Does this mean I don't have diabetes? Can I go back to the days where I didn't have to really watch what I ate? Can this be a by-product of good control? What's going on here? Should I return to my old diet and exercise routine and get re-tested? Help!!

What's going on is the same thing I'm experiencing. I might test positive for prediabetes, but would not qualify as diabetic at this point in time because it's so well controlled. Call it remission, reversal, whatever you want. Just don't call it cured. Call it a warning that your faced with the idea of staying healthy the rest of your life... or else. I sorta like the idea, myself. Don't you?

May be a dumb question, but can eating too much sugar during pregnancy cause gestational diabetes?

I'm 26 weeks now and I have the glucose test coming up in a week or so. I couldn't help eating a bag of sour gummy worms. I don't really eat to much sugar, but I drink a lot of oj, and grape juice. What causes gestational diabetes?

If you have the predisposition for gestational diabetes, your diet will absolutely affect whether you get it. If you don't have that predisposition, you could eat ice cream all day and it wouldn't "cause" it. But you don't know if you are likely to get it unless you had it in an earlier pregnancy, or it runs in your family. So until you're tested, it's a good idea to avoid big loads of sugar just in case you do have glucose intolerance.

OJ and grape juice are two of the most hard-hitting fast sugars that you can ingest. That's what they prescribe diabetics whose blood sugars are falling into coma level because it can raise them so quickly. If you have reason to think you might end up with gestational diabetes then you'd want to cut those out of your diet, but unless you have reason to think that, I would just keep the treats and sweets to an occasional thing and not all the time.

I am so tired. How do I get my energy back?

I have a 31/2 yr old girl and a 14 month old boy and it seems like a I never really recovered after the baby's birth, in terms of energy and mood (both kids were born by c-section). My doctor says this is normal to be so worn out, but it just doesn't seem right to me. I've been tested for diabetes, thyroid, liver function etc. The only thing that showed up was a slightly high (6.6) on the diabetes test. She said it is still in normal range, but just to be aware.
What can I do now?
I sleep well, just not enough.

Its totally normal. My mom once told me the first four or five years, she didn't sleep a wink. Mainly because you are so overworked, and worried about the children. if this does not go away however, check with a doctor for sleep aid. Good luck! and have fun with your beautiful children!

How do I talk to my doctor about using opiates for diabetic neuropathy?

I've asked this question a few times, but no one seems to get it. I've tried everything: Gabapentin, Pregabalin, NSAIDs, acetaminophen, foot creams. Nothing else seems to help the painful stabbing in my feet and toes and sometimes my feet are so hot they feel like they're in an oven.

First of all , a doctor that does not treat the pain first is a piss poor excuse for a medical professional.You treat the pain first and then the ailment.
A great non-addicting Opiate is Tramadol. I can stand the pain during the day but at nite , around 5 or 6 o'clock I take 3 capsules (50mg. each) of Tramadol . It lasts all nite , so as to sleep well.

Don't ask .Demand script for tramadol . If he refuses , get a new doctor.
I really feel sorry for us diabetics.I would say only 5 out of a 100 doctors really understand diabetes. Plus many don't care. Get the sheep in and out fast , and charge them to the hilt.

Beleive me Tramadol is great. I buy them 1000 at a time . I live in Thailand. I don't have to ask anyone , I buy over the counter. They cost me about 5 cent a piece. My metformin cost 8/10's of a cent. Also buy them by the thousands.
I take it you are American. Did you know we are 37th in the world for health care . And 50 th in the world for longetivy. What a shame , for all the money spent to greedy doctors and hospitals , insurance companies. A crying shame.
I have a great doctor here in thailand an it costs $4 a visit. My Hba1c is 5.5 , my blood pressure is 118/68 and cholesterol is 183. And no meds for the cholesterol. Plus I'm 67 years old.

Diabetic comma Question, Please help.?

My friend, 30 yrs old has been in a diabetic coma 4 days When he went in his BS was at 2600. He has muscle movements like he's tring to get out of bed almost like he's having a nightmare and he opens his eyes wide but he seems confused but pneumonia has set in. What are the chances of him getting out of this? How long do these things last? His CT scan came back negative but is blood pressure is fair to low his heart rate get's high sometimes it's 108 but there were times it got up to 118. He is in good physical shape and he works out all the time. We are all praying and being hopeful but I wonder if he will be alright. We are worried about brain damage but since the CT scan came back negative that's supposed to be a good thing they are going to do a ECG for brain waves and they said that there was no swelling of the brain. If there is anyone out there please answer my questions or give me any helpful information.

As long as your friend is in good medical care he should come through this fine.
It will take some time though, weeks or even months. It can be often very difficult to get the diabetes back under control after such a severe case and the pneumonia is only going to complicate things further.
However with good medical care it will be taken care of and will turn around much more quickly once the pneumonia is cleared up.
