The kidneys are vital organs that perform several functions in the human body, but they are susceptible to a variety of illnesses and disorders. Although many kidney diseases can be successfully treated, early detection is crucial, and symptoms of kidney disease often go unnoticed until the late stages of an illness. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that 26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease and that millions more are at risk and do not know it. Chronic kidney disease and kidney failure including nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis are the ninth leading cause of death among Americans, and kidney disease is connected to other serious health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease. The Encyclopedia of Kidney Diseases and Disorders contains more than 100 detailed articles covering all aspects of the kidneys and kidney diseases. This comprehensive new A-to-Z resource explains how the kidneys work, as well as what diseases and disorders affect them, how they can be diagnosed, and how they can be treated. Appendixes provide directories of helpful organizations and resources, as well as kidney disease statistics.Topics include:Acute kidney injury Chronic kidney diseaseDiabetic nephropathyEnd-stage renal diseaseHemodialysisKidney cancerKidney stonesPolycystic kidney disease.

My 70 yr father has renal failure and must have dialysis 3 times a week. How do we him get financial aid?
I was told there is a federal program that pays all costs involved but, I have been searching all day and just can not find one. By the way, he resides in California, and also owns a small cafe. The expense of the dialysis and other diabetes related expenses even with Medicare is out of his financial ability to continue with the treatments! Please help us.
Kidney foundations? Societies? Organizations?
Medicare denied him additional aid because he has $3000.00 in the bank! This is absolutely DISGUSTING!
If he's a veteran he can get treatment at the VA.

Does anyone know what a BG curve for blood sugar entails in a dog?
My dog is a diabetic. We just found out on June 16th and I have heard that a BG curve is a good thing to do to find out how much insulin to give a dog, but I don't know what it entails.
When should this be done? I mean how soon should a curve be done on my puppy?
A blood glucose curve involves a days stay at the vets, at least. Blood sugar readings are taken at least every couple of hours, sometimes more frequently, to monitor how the sugar levels fluctuate during the day and how well the body responds to the insulin. I normally take a pre-breakfast and morning insulin glucose, then given them breakfast and their insulin and d every 2 hours from there. Insulin can be adjusted based on how your dog responds, however it will take time to get your dog stabilised and probably several blood glucose curves.
Edit - Your curve should be done right away, because all the time you are waiting, your dog is an unstable diabetic.

I have to take lunch with me wherever I go and am fed up with the same old, same old... A typical pack up for me is:- 1 ciabatta roll with red onion, alfalfa, radish sprouts, rocket with either egg mayo, black forest ham, sliced beef or spicey, sliced turkey (home made), a tangerine and sometimes a noodle salad.
I cannot eat shellfish, bananas, pineapple, kiwi, grapes (severe allergy) I do not - so do not like cold pasta salads - I hate the texture of cold pasta.
I do like spicey and try to use things like mustards, horse-radish etc. I have to eat throughout the day.
I need to keep things light weight, I always have to carry lunch, lucozade, weak squash (non sugar) etc. And they must be eaten without cutlery if at all possible. I do not like to eat salads on a bus!
How about a wrap with mountain bread, pita bread or a tortilla and spread it with mustard, sour cream with some salsa would be nice too and just add whatever salad ingredients you like and whatever meat,or you could use a hard boiled egg instead of meat for something different. You might be able to make some of your own sushi and make a little bento kit to take with you with some rice or salad.

A hungry mouse devours a meal consisting of such vegetables and fruits as a crisp white turnip, sweet yellow corn, tart blue berries, and even a juicy pink watermelon. After enjoying such a repast, the mouse takes a nap and awakens...just in time for dinner. Is it common for drug tests to test for Benzodiazepines?
My boarding school does random drug tests, which they charge our parents $110 for. They generally don't work very well, considering some of my friends have passed when it seemed impossible. Do you think it is likely that this test can detect benzodiazepines?
Most schools will provide a test that checks for five categories. These five categories include:
· Cocaine – Includes Cocaine, Crack and Benzoylecognine
· Cannabinoids – Includes Marijuana and Hash
· Amphetamines – Includes Speed, Methamphetamines and amphetamines
· Opiates – Includes Heroin, Opium, Codeine and Morphine
· Phencyclidine – PCP
But Depending on what school you are in, they can test for additional drugs such as:
· Barbiturates – Including Phenobarbital, Scorbarbitol and Butalbital
· Hydrocodone – Including Vicodin and Lortab
· Mehqualone – Known most commonly as Quaaludes or Ludes
· Benzodiazepines – Includes Valium, Xanax, Librium, Serax and Rohypnol
· Methadone
· Propoxyphene – Includes Darvon compounds
· Ethanol – Known as Alcohol
· MDMA or Ecstasy

Is anyone using the MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Pump and the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System?
I've had type 1 Diabetes for 43 years and have been researching the MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System Insulin Pump with the REAL-Time continuous glucose monitoring system. I am presently on Lantus pens daily with Humalog pen insulin taken before meals.
After reading the materials they sent me, I would like to hear from someone who is actually using these two systems together to see how they like it. The company, Medtronic, makes it sound like the best thing next to having a new pancreas, but I'm wondering if it's as wonderful as they make it sound.
Any information would help! Pros and cons! Thanks!
I use the Medtronic Paradigm and CGMS and I love what it has done for me. I've had type 1 since 1971 and I am at the point where I very rarely feel my lows. The CGMS has helped me with my lows and especially my night time lows. My endo has it set to alarm when I go below 85. It has been a wonder knowing that I'm not going so low I need a glucagon injection.
I do not like how bulky the system is but I have gotten used to it now. Just like getting used to wearing a pump. My first few yrs on a pump were difficult especially with wearing dresses. Medtronic and internet companies make different carriers to hide the pump in many different locations on the body. I have several carriers and I no longer dread wearing a dress.
Blood sugar control has been so much easier with the CGMS. Of course the CGMS is not the same as blood testing but it is pretty close. Usually my blood sugars are only a few points off from what the CGMS tells me. I love the graphs too. It's so nice to see my peaks and lows for the last few days. It's also nice to know when I'm dropping too fast and getting too high. It really has been life changing.
Yes it would be so nice to get a real pancreas that works properly but since I know that to get one I'd have to be in sad shape I'm content dealing with a pump and CGMS. A little bulkiness as opposed to a life time of anti rejection meds is better for me. It really has changed my life. I used to have to eat before bed every night to avoid lows and now I don't.

Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens`s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100% organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread "culture of death"-symbolized by addictive junk food-that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life.
The ABC of Diabetes provides a complete overview of diabetes including the aetiology, diagnosis and management of Types 1 and 2 diabetes, detection and prevention, and the organization of care and support. With new chapters on psychological aspects, surveillance for complications, and support for people living with diabetes, this completely revised edition covers the many changes taking place in diabetes care, particularly in screening for Type 2 diabetes; in monitoring and insulin administration; in the organisation and delivery of care; and the increasing prevalence of diabetes in both developed and developing countries. This sixth edition covers the early recognition of diabetes and cardiovascular risk as well as preventing complications specific to diabetes. It also addresses the need to deliver diabetes care in a multidisciplinary setting, including the UK Quality and Outcomes Framework, and reflects the increasing emphasis on self-management and patient-centred care, particularly as it relates to lifestyle changes, glycaemic control and patient choice over treatment options. Drawing on the expertise of the University of Warwick as a centre of excellence for the teaching of diabetes care, the best selling ABC of Diabetes is ideal for GPs, primary care practitioners, practice nurses, diabetes specialist nurses, health visitors and junior doctors.
A revised new edition features comprehensive coverage of diabetes self-management, drawing on the latest research and treatment options from the past ten years to counsel readers on such areas as eating strategically, monitoring glucose levels, and administering medications.
