26 weeks with gestational diabetes what can I do!!?
SO I had a really high score with my glucose test (that all pregnant women take now) so I had to take the three hour one, and my moms biological mother has diabetes and my mom had toxemia with her 1st and so on. So with how high I tested I had to change my diet. I'm normally only 135 lbs or so before pregnancy, and in decent shape so not obese by any means. Since I switched my diet to all wheat and no empty carbs and cut out sugar and whatever I'm starving all the time, it almost seems like thats the only thing that fills me up like pasta and heavy meals. Right after a meal or snack my stomach is jumping again for food and growling like I haven't ate in a week. I don't know if this is because I'm further along and hitting those 1st trimester symptoms again being tired all the time and way hungry or if it is from my new diet. What can I do!!!!
Even though being overweight increases your risk to develop Gestational Diabetes this does not mean that all overweight women do nor does it mean that women of average weight don't. Your family history also plays a role in increasing your risk. If you have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes it is most typical for your doctor to refer you to a diabetes counselor or a dietician to discuss meal options. You should not be starving and if you are than a call to your dietician or diabetes counselor is in order. I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy and I actually had a hard time eating all the food on my meal plan. You should be able to eat most lean meats and protein foods along with an unlimited amount of most vegetables (not starchy ones as in potatoes, corn, and green peas). Many times the hunger comes from not having enough protein. Each meal and snack should have some type of protein included with it in addition to a healthy carbohydrate choice. The foods you will want to eat in specific quantities and in moderation are milk, yogurt, bread, grains, pasta, rice, starchy vegetables, legumes (dried beans), fruit, starchy snacks (crackers, chips), and sweets. Pasta is certainly allowed, but you want to eat it in moderate quantities as well as add plenty of vegetables and a protein. Some women do quite well with 3 main meals per day, but I preferred to eat 5-6 mini meals as it seemed to keep my blood sugar levels more even plus eliminated me ever getting super hungry. You may want to do some label reading and make sure you are actually getting enough carbohydrates in your meals and snacks. It varies from woman to woman, but if you are eating 3 meals and 2-3 snacks each day, the snacks should have around 15-30 grams of carbohydrates while meals should be around 30-60 grams of carbohydrates. You may be getting too many carbs at one time if you are eating something seemingly healthy like a piece of whole grain toast with peanut butter but than add a large glass of milk and a piece of fruit. It seems healthy and it is, but depending on your target carb goal it may just be too much at one time. Instead of fruit with milk you may need to eat some raw veggies and save the fruit for another meal/snack.

At a time of dramatic increases in the prevalence of obesity, it is appropriate that Type 2 diabetes has received a great deal of attention by the endocrinology community. Clearly, the management of insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk is a critical issue. However, it is important to also acknowledge and address Type 1 diabetes, whose prevalence is also increasing, and whose management remains complex. Currently it is estimated that 10-15% of those with diabetes carry the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and frequently the diagnosis is not straightforward, as many clinicians recognize that more adults previously thought to have Type 2 diabetes actually have late-onset Type 1 diabetes (also termed latent autoimmune diabetes of the adult or LADA). Over the last decade tools for the management of Type 1 diabetes have also evolved; therefore, clinicians now have the opportunity to more closely replicate normal physiologic insulin secretion with either basal-bolus insulin therapy or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions. While these advancements allow clinicians to manage patients with Type 1 diabetes better, they also add complexity to patient treatment. An updated text to address the concepts behind the recognition of new onset Type 1 diabetes in adults, the ongoing care of adults with established Type 1 diabetes, and future potential therapies and devices is warranted to review these issues for both endocrinologists and primary care providers with an interest in diabetes. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library, this volume stands as a concise guide in the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes in adults. The authors briefly examine the classification and pathophysiology of Type 1 diabetes (including predication and prevention and LADA) and address management (blood glucose monitoring, insulin therapy, and Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion) and complications (Hyperglycemia, Retinocpathy, Nephropathy, Neuropathy, etc) of the disease. Finally

Hypertension and diabetes show a strong epidemiologic association. About 75% of adults with diabetes have blood pressure levels =130/80 mmHg or use antihypertensive medication and this percentage goes up to 90% if microalbuminuria is also present. On the other hand, individuals with hypertension are 2.5 times more likely to develop diabetes within 5 years of diagnosis. The presence of hypertension in patients with diabetes substantially increases the risk for both cardiovascular and renal diseases and is associated with a 7.2-fold increase in mortality, whereas in those with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, hypertension causes a 37-fold increase in mortality.Hypertension in type 1 diabetes generally results from the underlying nephropathy and in type 2 diabetes it usually occurs in the context of the cardio- metabolic syndrome. Understanding the pathophysiological context and the overall cardiovascular risk assessment together with the current therapeutic modalities for people with diabetes and hypertension is a sine qua non for effective management of this growing patient population. In this book we present to the primary care providers as well as to the sub-specialists an integrative approach to hypertension and diabetes including lifestyle and pharmacological approaches, focusing on overall cardiovascular risk reduction with special emphasis on high- risk population. We also provide an overview of the preventive measures for both hypertension and diabetes in the light of the most recent clinical trials. Finally, we discuss the future outlook for the epidemic and the ongoing clinical studies together with the various innovative diagnostic modalities.

has anyone tried the Freestyle Lite glucose monitor?
I'm hypoglycemic (not diabetic) and I have to monitor my glucose. The results seem to be all over the place-maybe my blood sugar is that unstable or maybe this monitor is?? I tested twice within 10 minutes...the first time it was 31 and 10 minutes later it was 62! And sometimes it just says "LO" and I'm like no kidding HOW low!? If you know anything about this monitor please help!
In the link below you can find two pages worth of comments from people (with diabetes) sharing their experiences with many different meters.
I would recommend you get another meter to compare your numbers against and determine whether you may not actually be showing those changes in short periods of time.
Another thing I can think of is that the sugars from something you ate when you were at 31 (BTW, that is VERY low, but I am sure you know that) kicked in within the next 10 minutes. It is possible.

I was wondering if anyone who has diabetes or anyone in general knows if urine test strips that test for ketones and glucose in urine are pretty accurate in "ruling out" diabetes. I know the fasting blood test is the most accurate in "diagnosing" diabetes, but if I just want to rule it out do you think these urine test strips are pretty accurate? The only real symptom I have is I cannot seem to gain weight no matter how much I eat. Thyroid problem has already been ruled out and my appetite is good.
it can tell if you do have ketones . the best way to find out for sure if you have diabetes or not is to go to your doctor and tell them do a blood test and tell you for sure if you do or do not have diabetes. it is quick and almost painless. it is better to know for sure than keep guessing.

How does Mitral Valve Prolapse signal affects the Systolic and Diastolic readings from a wrist BP meter?
i have been using a panasonic wrist blood pressure meter to keep track
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) as such will not cause much of any symptoms or a fall in bp ... but if it's associated with Mitral Regurgitation (MR) then ur systolic is expected to rise and diastolic is expected to drop a little bit
this occurs in MR because blood from the left ventricle flows into the l.atrium during the systole ( whereas in MVP the valve alone bulges into the l.arium) this causes a hyperdynamic circulation resulting in a high volume pulse and a increase in ur pulse pressure ( systolic b.p + diastolic b.p / 2 )

I know patient B is suffering from diabetes mellitus but is it type I or II and why??
yep have found an insulin result
Patient A= 5.5 ng/ml
Patient B= 0.22 ng/ml
So Patient B is a Type I diabetic.
Thanks for your answers.
Could be type two since the numbers seem to be coming back down. Not enough info to tell for sure. If the patient were a type one and wasn't treated, it would probably continue upward. The reason is, a type two produces insulin which, despite it not working all that well, will eventually bring the glucose levels down. An untreated type one has no insulin to bring the levels back to normal. Either way, this patient needs help.

With the advent of the worldwide obesity epidemic, a concurrent rise has occurred in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is affecting younger individuals-the disease is no longer exclusive to adulthood. Diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications are also occurring at an earlier age, leading to increasing demands and costs on the healthcare system. In addition, the morbidity, disability and premature death caused by diabetic complications create a huge burden to families, employers and society at large. Thankfully, there has been a tremendous growth in new therapeutic classes of medications to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. These agents target many of the pathophysiologic defects of the disease with fewer side effects than the older agents. Newer insulin formulations have more predictable kinetics so patients can achieve better glycemic control with less risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. Insulin delivery devices have also improved to include higher quality insulin pens, finer and shorter pen needles, and more technologically advanced insulin pumps. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library series, this handbook reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The content covers micro- and macrovascular diabetic complications, the array of glucose regulating therapies, treatment algorithms targeting the pathophysiologic defects of type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as strategies for macrovascular risk reduction via therapeutic lifestyle change (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), pharmacotherapeutic treatment of dyslipidemia and hypertension, bariatric surgery and subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy, among other topics. Because of the concise yet comprehensive nature of the handbook, this volume is an excellent point-of-care reference for the clinician who regulary treats obese and diabetic patients.
